East Devon Farm Holidays

Red Ruby Devon Cow, Holidays on the Farm

Culture & Heritage

Devon is bursting with heritage and a living tradition of local arts and crafts.  East Devon is no exception.

Exeter Cathedral is one of the finest in the country and makes part of a great day out in the ancient city of   Exeter - England’s smallest city.

The church of St Mary at Ottery St Mary, is a fourteenth century miniature of Exeter Cathedral.   It is an inspiring church and hosts a wonderful programme of music concerts throughout the year.  Staying with Ottery St Mary, this small town was home to Samuel Taylor Coleridge and once a year opens its doors to the  world who witness the famous Tar Barrel Rolling through its narrow streets.

Sidbury Village, East Devon Farm Holidays

Honiton is East Devon’s principal market town.  Much of its wealth was built on its lace making industry.  The town remembers its heritage at the Lace Museum in the High Street.  Honiton is now a favourite haunt for antique hunters and with one of the longest High Street’s in the country, should keep even the most experienced shopper busy!

Further to the east, the small market town of Axminster has built an international reputation for the quality of its carpet making.  Axminster Carpets still makes carpets at Axminster and these can be seen at its Show Rooms in the town.

The seaside fishing village of Beer still runs a small fishing fleet as do many of the towns along the coast. Fresh fish can be bought down by the harbour.  The stone from around Beer has been quarried for centuries.  A fascinating visit to Beer quarry caves opens the door to an the amazing underground world  of stone quarrying.

Inland, we have Goose Fairs at Colyton, the Honiton Agricultural Show in August which is one of the regions most important One Day Agricultural Shows.  It’s a great day out where every traditional breed of farm animal can be seen in all its resplendent Show Day Glory.

And last but not least in the beautiful regency seaside town of Sidmouth.  Walk along the promenade with fine regency architecture one side and the beach to the other.  Not an Amusement Arcade or speed boat in sight!  Sidmouth has lovely, children friendly beaches, traditional cafes, a wonderful array of local, independent shops, many lovely gardens and parks.

We’ll have to stop there!  We can’t mention it all in the website, but if this quick guide around East Devon is tempting, come and find all the bits we’ve missed out for yourself !
